|
The Epomeo mountain with its 789 meters is the highest top of the island and at the same time his "pivot orografico." Appeared in the Quaternary age, subsequently to an eruption sub-harbor the Epomeo mountain is not a volcano in the true sense of the term infact it misses the crater, but it is rather the product of lifting of the sea depths of mass magmatica "vomited" from the existing volcanic basin under the continental base of the Fields Flegrei. The name Epomeo has ancient origin. Strabone and Plinio called it "Epopeus", from the Greek "Eforào (or rather I look around).
From archaeological recoveries happened in the place "Bocca di Serra, Noia and Toccaneto, have verified that the Epomeo Mountain was inhabited since the III century a.c. from Greek populations and Romans. In more recent times, this peak offered refuge to illustrious people, persecuted by adverse events, as in the case of Giovanni d' Angiò or that bishops isclani aimed at by the wars and dispossessions give happened during the XV century.,

The departure up few years ago was effected by the plaza of Fountana using the mules, particularly proper for the difficult ascension.
Today the road is under best conditions, for the good walkers there is not better anything of that a to greet walk afoot and along the tortuous paths that bring in top.
In the hollow of the caves a small church was built devoted to S.Nicola and a Hermitage where they were picked up in prayer, in the job and in the meditation island and secular monks come by the Continent. There were weigh illustrious characters commanders, foreigners landed to these banks to dress the "saio" and to abandon the flatteries of the world. The small church almost certainly goes up again to the four hundred principles, while the hermitage was dug around 1587. The founder was Beatrice Quaddra, the same noblewoman that in 1575 founded on the Castle of Ischia the Monastery of the Clarisses. The first monks of the hermitage of St. Nicola are present on the Epomeo toward the second halves Six hundred. They stayed up to the eight hundred principles. Of some the name is known: Frà Giorgio the Bavaro, Frà Valentino Moretti, Fra Gaspare, Frà Gabriele d'ambra, Frà Antonio, Frà Michele, Frà Desiderio and Frà Nicola ramy. On the hermitage it withdrew him in 1735, the Governor of the island of Ischia Joseph of Argout, for a vote done to St. Nicola.
