During the Aragonese period, on the top of the islet of Sant'Angelo, a tower of sighting was built for signalling to the inhabitants of the hamlets of the island the to draw near of ships pirate. The Tower was of rectangular form, to two floors, endowed with a bridge wood drawbridge, maneuvered by the tall one, built with stone of tufo. It was also used then by the Borbonis. In 1808 the ships English bombed him/it and they destroyed him/it. The country was developed on the harbor in the meantime. The cult of St. Michael moved him to the village where the small church existed of "Saint Maria to Earth", on which the family calosirto, to which St. GiovanGiuseppe of the Cross belonged had enjoyed the right of Patronage since 1777. Here coming from the Tower, the wooden statue of St. Michael was transported. Around the 1850 fù then built adjacent to the cemetery the new and actual parish Church, to work of the Canon Joseph Iacono. It assumed the title of Saint Maria Assunta in Sky. Quì found stable abode St. Michael, whose cult had beginning May 8 th 663, when the Longobardis won to Siponto, near Manfredonia and they chose them to it patron.

The church of San Michele Arcangelo is on the hill of Madonnella, in the charming village Sant'Angelo Ischia. The Church is also dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption and was built back in 1850, thanks to the work of Canon Giuseppe Iacono, who was also the first pastor. The church has a very simple structure, although in the years various changes were made. On the right is the old church tower, beneath which is placed an image of St. Michael in majolica.

Today the new bell tower is located on the left. Inside the church, altar you can admire a painting of the nineteenth century with San Rocco and the Assumption. On both sides there are two niches with statues of Jesus and the Heart of Our Second altar on the left, in a niche, there is a wooden statue of San Michele Arcangelo century. The sacristy is also preserved a painting of the Madonna and Child 800.
